The crime scene pictures (which I hate, by the way) are like stills from a lost movie. Of course they were done with large-format cameras (4x5 Speed Graphics were used by the news photographers and the LAPD photographer--he's the gent in the sweater in some of the pictures) and done with strong, undiffused lighting (they used huge flash bulbs even in daylight).

Because of the big negatives, the original pictures are very crisp and hold lots of detail even when greatly enlarged. The murky, second-generation versions on the Internet or published in books don't capture the fine details in the originals.
